On Saturday, the 22nd, NSDCAC hosted its 3rd Annual September Breakfast and Community Forum at the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club at the University of California, San Diego. In view of the upcoming November 2018 midterm elections, the event theme chosen was entitled, “Democracy in Action: Community Engagement in Voter Education”. The objective was to encourage community members to become engaged, informed, self-aware, and therefore more active participants in our democracy. The program format featured The Honorable Randa Trapp, Judge of San Diego Superior Court; a Distinguished Guest Panel including Satia Austin, President/CEO, North County NAACP Chapter; Dr. Dayo Gore, Professor/Chair, Ethnic Studies Department, UC San Diego; Norma Mtume, Marriage and Family Therapist/former member of Black Panther Party; Al Abdallah, CEO Urban League of San Diego County. Speakers elaborated on various aspects of the U.S. electoral process, voter behavior, community involvement strategies/ initiatives, and the participation rate of women and people of color. There were over sixty guests in attendance, as well as additional involving a Silent Auction with theme gift baskets, delicious baked goods, 50/50 raffle, and a School Supply Drive to benefit Vista Academy for Performing Arts.
