NSDCAC YOUTH INITIATIVE MENTORING GROUPS: DELTA GEMS, DELTA ACADEMY, AND EMBODI
STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS)
AND STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, AND MATHEMATICS)
| During the class meeting of April 14, 2018, participants and parents of Delta Academy, Delta GEMS, and EMBODI were actively engaged in NSDCAC STEM and STEAM Career Pathway class with a phenomenal presentation on STEM and STEAM career choices by EMBODI Mentor Charles Watson assisted by Maleata Hall. Parents and participants were asked to ponder upon the role of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in solving current and future world problems. Our youth were asked to broaden their horizon and consider careers in STEM and STEAM areas of study and their contribution and service to our world.
Mr. Watson (a financial expert) and Soror Hall (an engineer) emphasized financial security and managing one ’s income in the creating a budget and monthly planning activity; demonstrating how managing one’s income and resources is vital in accomplishing life’s goals and financial independence.
The finance lesson was followed by “Be a Horticulturist” challenging our youth to care for Mother Earth. Soror Bickham (a math teacher) led this activity. Participants, parents, mentors, and Sorors had to pot their own individual plant. Soror Bickham gave pointers and guidelines for keeping plants healthy. Nurturing and caring for a plant to healthy growth was a symbolic lesson to remind us that we can all play a vital role in living responsibly on Planet Earth; reducing waste, taking an active role in caring for our planet, and electing officials who care about our planet. Participants might start a garden, compost, or a recycling club. Also, they were urged to use biodegradable products and LESS plastic, especially water bottles and straws that are so harmful to marine animals.
The next Youth Initiative Class will be a Beach Walk/Clean-up/Cookout and will take place at the Oceanside Beach on May 6, 2018, from 3 – 6 pm. Participants, parents, mentors, and Sorors will walk the beach, picking up plastic bottles and will end at the Cook-out Event.
